How to be Present in the moment
Have you ever had that moment where you are in a public place relaxing with friends or family when suddenly you are only thinking about that moment, that point in time? You’re not thinking about past friends or that one time your childhood friend fell on roller skates and it looked like she was doing the can-can. Nor you are thinking about the future, whether or not you’ll try that new pistachio cake recipe on Pinterest. You are here in the now, this very second reading a blog post on how to be present.
What if I can give you the scoop on how to be present longer so that it can be more impactful on your life?
Here are 4 ways on how to be present in the moment…
1. BREATHE BABE!
Honestly breathing is a perfect way on how to be present in the moment. I bet most of the human population forgets that it’s breathing due to involuntary functions that happen in the brain. There are many benefits to breathing exercises such as lowering blood pressure, easing anxiety and depression, better sleep, and improving focus. Here, I’v added a link to the different techniques you can choose from so your body, mind, and soul can heal.
2. Put the phone down…
Our cell phones have been the center of our lives ever since the device was created. I know my generation (Gen Z hehe) has grown up with this technology as far as grade school. Not many people know that cell phones give out a small amount of radiation when it’s on. I like to either put on my DND for an hour, that way I can work on other small projects or meditate. Yes, at first it will be tempting to check the time or check to see if your Doordash order is on its way but this method will help you tune into the moment. Sometimes the quiet can be “loud” but it’s a fantastic way to disconnect from the world.
3. Meditation
Meditation is my favorite way of being in the present moment, especially if it’s a guided one. What I like to do is download this app called Insight Timer which has a plethora of guided meditations, music, talks, and courses you can take for your spiritual journey. I enjoy turning off my bedroom lights and lighting a candle that smells delightful that way most of my senses are relaxed.
Meditation can be challenging for some, but I know it was for me. I couldn’t even focus for the first 2 minutes when I started. It took me 6 months to finish a guided meditation that lasted 10 minutes…
On the Insight Timer app, some people teach you how to meditate for beginners. Please note that this method takes longer to master and do not rush it. Be patient with yourself because meditation can benefit you in the long run!
4. Journaling
Journaling is a fantastic way to be in the present moment. Writing down your thoughts is a form of releasing anxiety or other negative energy that you may have stored inside you. When you journal you are being in the present moment because physically you are writing and thinking about what you’re writing at the same time! Duh! You don’t even have time to think about the past or future. Spilling your thoughts on a piece of paper can help you have epiphanies on certain circumstances as well as provide different perspectives on your thought process.
Combining these methods has helped me change my way of thinking about life and our society. Most of us are living in the fast lane which can cause unnecessary stress and anxiety in our lives and we miss out on new growth opportunities. What is important is focusing on the areas in our lives we want to improve on so we become better humans experiencing this life.
You are this one human, living on this continent, on this side of the world, on this planet, in this solar system, in this tiny area of the Milky Way galaxy, IN THIS TINY SECTION OF THIS UNIVERSE! Just something to think about.
